Yes it’s frustrating when us-east-1 goes down and the blast radius is global. It’s also an opportunity to consider path dependence and maintaining customer trust.
If AWS could truly cellularize all services, what unexpected costs would they likely need to impose on customers? Customers didn’t ask for unplanned migration costs for resiliency improvements they didn’t know they needed. It’s not like AWS doesn’t know that us-east-1 violates the fault boundary guidance they provide to customers.
It’s also a reminder that AWS services (like every other complex system) are layered.
Having said all that, strongly recommend starting greenfield work anywhere other than us-east-1. 😀

“Technologies like LLMs have utility, but the absurd way they’ve been over-hyped, the fact they’re being forced on everyone, and the insistence on ignoring the many valid critiques about them make it very difficult to focus on legitimate uses where they might add value.”
