One intentional and seemingly beneficial language change I’ve made over the years is to reframe “absence of negative” conversations into “presence of positive”.
Examples:
Reduce Tech Debt -> Create engineering invariants
Reduce system complexity -> Increase transparency
Reduce latency -> Improve performance
Reduce process -> Increase feedback cycle frequency
Eliminate unknowns -> Build confidence
This framing forces me to articulate why doing something differently will be beneficial. Along the lines of “freedom from” to “freedom to” lens.
