Thinking instead of “context” it should be named “empathy”. Seems like every technology operates as a closed world identity provider, and yet no tech is sufficient to provide a complete system in isolation.

Distributed tracing is hard because you need to share.

Wed Mar 14 17:14:28 +0000 2018

Replying to @danieljyoo

I don’t know, but that seems like a good place for innovation.

Beyond user identity, even artifact identity. How do SemVer, SHAs, and container:latest relate?

Wed Mar 14 17:33:04 +0000 2018

Replying to @danieljyoo

I don’t think so :) Agree, federating identity is important & there are systems to help with that (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/cognito/latest/developerguide/cognito-identity.html).

Wed Mar 14 19:59:49 +0000 2018

Replying to @danieljyoo

I’m just rambling about how we “move” code around. From SHA, to SemVer, to Container, to Clouds, to Browsers.

Eg, UPS tracking code. In tech, each handoff introduces an entirely new way to code & track the same “thing”. The only way the world shows up is via “context”.

Wed Mar 14 20:03:03 +0000 2018

Replying to @danieljyoo

Dist tracing is (partially) about bridging the disconnects that each tech boundary introduces.

It is possible to pull “context” across the boundaries, but there’s usually some loss along the way.
