I’ll throw a theory in there: the @Etsy culture that produced your tooling is not as easily copied, so the tools that embed those values and capabilities that it’s a system to discover the system isn’t something that resonates early. 🤷‍♂️

Wed Jan 05 00:47:48 +0000 2022

Replying to @chrismunns and @Etsy

My take is that ops tooling embeds (or ignores) assumptions about the material being acted upon. Not to mention the micro motives and incentives for the people involved. Whether “glue work” is considered valuable due to the outcomes, or dismissed as “not technical” because NIH. https://twitter.com/rakyll/status/1461049242345111554

Hot take: CI/CD is an aspiring experimentation engine. There is a huge space that a service can explore (features, performance, availability, cost, etc.) and increasing the experimentation rate means greater opportunities.

Build an engine that enables fast learning.

Wed Jan 05 01:35:59 +0000 2022

Replying to @mweagle

The constraining metaphor is the pipeline itself. It’s a reductionist view that implies delivering a homogeneous material over time.

I suppose it could be reduced to “bytes”, but that’s not particularly helpful.

Wed Jan 05 01:47:23 +0000 2022

Replying to @mweagle

When the material soon breaks the homonegeneity illusion, the “pipeline” starts to feel limiting. Because it’s not built to deliver variety or understand history.

But that’s what we need it to do. Because if we could predict the future…

Wed Jan 05 02:33:53 +0000 2022

Replying to @dberkholz

That makes sense & I’m thinking more in terms of path-dependence and the external conditions changing over time which creates new opportunities. Agree that intentionally exploring those via hypotheses and experiments is the way to go.
